Playing

Before going back to work I had time to play around with a few things.

I’ve been trying out ideas for the maze like book structure. The imagery is a bit rudimentary but I’m thinking ruined villages with abandoned buildings and streets.

I also used some of the images that I prepared for the solar print workshop to have another go at gum arabic transfer printing.

I like the two colour print but it took several goes to get something that worked. I’ve signed up for a print exchange organised by Lesley but I think I think this method is too hit and miss to try and get eight good multicolour prints.

  1. Love, love, love that book structure! It is my favorite!

I can't figure out how the pages connect at the spine though. I have been playing around with the flag book with folded pages which kind of stands that way.

    1. Its a cheat. It's 4 pieces, each one folded out of a single sheet of paper, and so far I've only stood them together. I don't know yet if a want a distinct front and back or a circular structure so I haven't worked out yet how I'll sew them.

  2. Lots to absorb here. I can't tell you how impressive it is to see someone make a mock up version. Beats my cobble it together and think it out as I go along approach. Do show it as it progresses Jac please. As for the gum arabic, I think your results beat mine. I think the two colour image is particularly strong and effecting!

    1. Glad you like it. I wish I could get the hang of getting the registration more reliably right. I only got a couple of decent two colour images out of the whole batch

  4. The book looks fascinating Jac - and I continue to be intrigued by the gum arabic transfers- my head does twirls and somersaults trying to work that one out! Looking forward to the print exchange!

  5. Oh I love your gum arabic prints Jac, but I love the technique. Hmm, something else I want to get back to doing more. Sigh.
Your book structure (not the cut-outs, the four folded pages) is the same as my latest for BAO and then I had to decide how I wanted to bind them. It took me ages as I wanted them to open into a circle as you have. Eventually I set on sewing them into an accordian spine, but I'll be very interested to see what you decide.
