Instead I started planning a book to enter for
the 23 Sandy Gallery exhibition ‘Wayfinders’. I began by exploring old maps which
led to medieval sea monsters and then onto bestiaries. As usual it
hasn’t gone in the direction I was planning, I think this book is turning
into a print. And unusually for my work it seems to be getting
a bit political. These are some of
my preparatory scribbles.
Although I was going for tall and thin I think I prefer the second one. It gives a more chaotic feel which fits the subject better.
I love your sea monsters. They have such character!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like them
DeleteI think you're right about the feel of the piece - the first one seems far more serene and ordered somehow... Love what you are exploring - should be great!
ReplyDeleteStill not quite happy with the composition. I'll ponder it for a while, but glad you like it
DeleteI think you are right about the landscape version. The way the eye reads it takes in all those wonderful creatures. I love the idea of starting with one thought and letting it evolve into this delight. The print will be worth waiting for but do you now have to come up with another plan for the book?
ReplyDeleteI'm reconsidering aspects of the print so I've gone back to the book. I'm using the same animals but I think it will be too detailed to hand print so I'm working on painting sections for scanning and digital print. I'm considering using the book as an artists statement explaining the imagery of the print
